Shopping for cotton pajamas with your dog’s face on? Check the print method first.
Are custom pet pajamas cotton? Rarely, when the dog’s face is printed all over, and MyDogPics pajamas are not: they are polyester satin or a 95% polyester, 5% spandex stretch knit, because dye sublimation only bonds with polyester. Cotton can carry a dog’s face through other print methods, with trade-offs in coverage and feel.
Our satin and stretch-knit pajamas carry your dog’s face all the way around, printed from the photo you upload. Mix satin and knit if you like. Free US shipping on every order, and your 2nd set is 25% off in the cart, automatically.

Why custom pet pajamas are rarely cotton
The all-over look of pet face pajamas comes from dye sublimation. Sublimation ink is printed onto transfer paper; heat and pressure then turn it into a gas that enters polyester fibers and stays locked inside them as the fabric cools.
Epson, which builds sublimation printers, says the process requires polyester fabrics or polymer-coated surfaces, and its textile printing primer specifies white or light-colored polyester or mostly-polyester blends. Cotton is on neither list: sublimation dye doesn’t bond with cotton fibers, so the image comes out pale and doesn’t hold.
That is why MyDogPics pajamas are 100% polyester satin or a 95% polyester, 5% spandex knit. It lets a dog’s face repeat all the way around the garment with no printed layer on top that could crack or peel, and the same primer notes that sublimation leaves the fabric’s feel unchanged.
How a dog’s face gets onto cotton instead
Cotton pajamas with a dog face on them do exist. They are made in one of three other ways, and each changes what you get:
- Direct-to-garment (DTG). An inkjet printer applies water-based ink to a finished, already-sewn garment. Epson’s primer says DTG works best on 100% cotton and mostly-cotton blends. Because the garment is already assembled, the print usually covers a flat area such as a chest or a leg panel rather than running over the seams.
- Printed yardage, then cut and sewn. Direct-to-fabric printers print onto rolls of fabric, cotton included, before any garment exists. That can give an all-over cotton print, but the fabric has to be printed, cut and sewn for each design, a much bigger job for a single personalized pair.
- Heat transfers. The image is printed onto a film and pressed onto the fabric. It works on cotton, but the design is a layer sitting on top, and that layer is the part that can crack, peel or feel stiff.
So if you want custom dog pajamas in cotton, ask which of these methods the seller uses and whether the print is a panel or truly all over. A photo of the back and the seams will usually answer the question. To try a transfer on cotton yourself, our guide to making your own pajamas walks through it.
Cotton vs polyester satin vs stretch knit
| Property | Cotton | Polyester satin | Polyester-spandex knit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fiber | Plant fiber | 100% polyester in a satin weave | 95% polyester, 5% spandex |
| How a photo print is applied | DTG panel, printed yardage or heat transfer | Dye sublimation into the fiber | Dye sublimation into the fiber |
| Coverage on a finished garment | Usually a panel | All the way around | All the way around |
| Surface | Depends on the weave; plain cotton is matte | Smooth, glossy face and a duller back | Knitted loops that stretch |
| Moisture | Absorbs moisture readily | Absorbs very little | Absorbs very little |
| Stretch | Depends on the knit or weave | Little give: woven, no spandex | 4-way stretch |
| In MyDogPics pajamas | Not used | Long-sleeve and short sets, men’s sets, a kids set, a shirt dress | Adult pants, kids pants, a stretch set |
The satin column’s glossy face, dull back and snag risk come from the weave itself, which is worth understanding before you compare listings. At MyDogPics the choice is between the two polyester columns: satin or stretch knit.

Does cotton sleep cooler than polyester?
Cotton’s reputation as the cooler choice rests on how readily it absorbs moisture. The sleep research is thinner than the reputation.
A 2024 systematic review in the Journal of Sleep Research found only nine studies on sleepwear and bedding fibers and called the link between fiber and sleep quality complex. The study in that review that compared cotton and polyester sleepwear, with older adults in a warm 30°C (86°F) room, reported no significant differences in its sleep measures, although the poor sleepers in it took longer to reach REM sleep in polyester.
In practice, coverage is the easier lever. If the wearer runs hot, a satin short set, the loose-shorts version or the short-sleeve shirt dress leaves more skin uncovered; if they run cold, the long-sleeve sets and the pants with elastic ankle cuffs keep warmth in. Short and long styles sit side by side in the dog face pajamas collection.
Satin is the weave, polyester is the fiber
Satin describes how threads are woven, not what they’re made of. Pratt Institute’s Textile Research Lab describes the satin weave as one where a warp thread passes over four or more weft threads before it is tied down.
Those long floats scatter less light, which gives a glossy face and a dull back, and they snag more easily than tighter weaves. Satin was traditionally woven from silk; today it is also woven from polyester and other fibers, and cotton woven the same way is usually sold as sateen.
So when a listing says “satin”, read the fiber line. US labeling rules enforced by the Federal Trade Commission require fiber content by generic fiber name and percentage by weight, and an online listing has to show the same fiber information as the label.
Trade names such as “milk silk” or “cotton feel” describe a finish or a feel; the fiber line tells you what the fabric is. MyDogPics’ satin is 100% polyester, not silk.
Choosing between MyDogPics satin and stretch knit
The satin styles include a long-sleeve button-up set with piping, short sets with standard or loose-fit shorts, a short-sleeved shirt paired with full-length pants, men’s long and short sets, a kids set and a shirt dress. Satin suits someone who likes a classic, tailored pajama and a smooth surface, and it photographs with a slight sheen.

The stretch knit comes as unisex pajama pants in XS–5XL with elastic ankle cuffs, kids pants in 2Y–10Y, and a straight-leg stretch set with a classic pajama collar in S–5XL. It suits loungers, restless sleepers and children, since 4-way stretch moves in every direction.

Both fabrics carry the same all-over print. Compare the styles side by side in the pet face pajamas collection, see the kids sizes in custom kid pajamas, or use our buying guide to match a style to the wearer.
Who this fabric guide helps: gift ideas for every dog person
Custom dog face pajamas make a gift for a dog lover who prefers cotton, as long as the fabric question is settled before you order. Each card names the buyer, the doubt they usually have about polyester and the honest answer from this guide.
Dog moms
A dog mom who only buys cotton may be disappointed by a polyester pair, and a cotton tee with a slogan still shows a stranger’s dog, not hers. MyDogPics pajamas are polyester because that is what lets her own dog’s face run all the way around the garment.
Dog dads
A dog dad who sleeps hot may dread polyester, since cotton has the cooler reputation. The sleep research on fibers is thin, so choose by coverage instead of by fiber name: the men’s satin short-sleeve shirt and shorts set runs S to 4XL.
Gift buyers for a dog lover
A friend who loves dogs probably has everything, and “soft fabric” in a listing tells you nothing about what you are buying. Read the fiber line before you order, because the percentages tell you what the fabric is. Send one sharp close-up of the dog; MyDogPics checks every photo and emails first if it is too small, dark or blurry.
Kids and parents
Kids outgrow pajamas fast, so parents want a fabric that moves with them. The kids pajama pants are a 95% polyester, 5% spandex knit with 4-way stretch, which means they give in every direction, and the elastic cuffs let you adjust the leg length as a child grows.
Matching family
A matching family set stalls when someone is left out because their size or style prints differently from the rest. At MyDogPics the same photo and the same dye-sublimation method go on every pajama garment, so adults, kids and the shirt dress all carry the same all-over face.
Couples
Couples who share a dog often hand each other the same gift every anniversary. Matching pajamas from one photo change that, and the choice between satin and stretch knit lets each partner pick the feel they sleep in.
Grandparents
Grandparents who live far away miss the grand-dog and often hesitate over a fabric they have never worn. The stretch knit pajama pants are the easiest yes: unisex and relaxed, with an elastic waistband and elastic ankle cuffs, in adult sizes up to 5XL.
New puppy owners
The puppy stage goes by fast, and a new puppy owner has no keepsake yet. Because faces repeat across the whole fabric, a close-up from the first weeks works better than a shot from across the room, on satin and on stretch knit alike.
Holiday and occasion gift buyers
Christmas and birthday shoppers hit a last-minute problem with every custom pair, whatever the fabric. The pajamas are made to order after checkout, which means the order date sets the deadline, and the shipping page has current times.
Grieving owners
After a dog has passed away, the house feels empty, and nobody wants to get a gift wrong. A favorite photo on pajamas is a quiet tribute and keepsake, so pick the cut they would reach for and put no pressure on the timing.
Multi-dog households
In a home with two dogs, one is left out of most gifts. Some designs take more than one dog, with one photo per dog, and both fabrics carry the same all-over print.
Self-purchasers
Choosing pajamas for yourself is tricky when cotton is your habit. The real question is coverage: polyester carries your dog’s face all the way around, while a cotton print from another seller is usually a panel. Treat yourself to the one you will actually wear.

Cotton and custom pet pajamas: quick answers
Are MyDogPics pajamas cotton?
No. MyDogPics pajamas are either 100% polyester satin or a 95% polyester, 5% spandex stretch knit. Dye sublimation, the process that prints your dog’s face all over the garment, only bonds with polyester, so a cotton version would need a different and more limited print method.
Why aren’t more pet face pajamas cotton?
Because the all-over face print depends on sublimation, which needs polyester. Cotton alternatives either print a panel onto a finished garment, print the fabric before it’s sewn, or press a transfer on top, and each gives up all-over coverage, simplicity or the dye-in-the-fiber finish.
Is polyester satin the same as silk?
No. Satin is a weave that can be made from different fibers. Silk satin is woven from silk; MyDogPics satin is woven from 100% polyester, which is what allows the dog’s face to be sublimated into it.
Will polyester pajamas feel too warm?
That depends more on the person and the room than on a simple fiber rule, and sleep studies comparing cotton and polyester sleepwear are few and mixed. If you sleep warm, short sleeves and shorts are the simplest fix, and several MyDogPics satin styles have them.
Can sublimation work on a cotton-polyester blend?
Only the polyester share takes the dye, so a blend prints paler as its cotton share rises. Epson’s primer calls for 100% polyester or primarily polyester blends, which is why MyDogPics uses 100% polyester satin and a 95% polyester knit.
Does the fabric change how sharp my dog’s face looks?
Less than the photo does. Sharpness mostly comes from the picture you upload: a close-up with sharp eyes, the whole head in frame and soft daylight. MyDogPics reviews each upload before printing, and the photo guide shows which kinds of photos print well.
